Activist leaders lead with love, care, and solidarity (McKay& Mills, 2022). They understand that education is not just about the academic outcomes of learners, but about nurturing humans. They build schools where students and staff feel valued, heard, and empowered to imagine new possibilities.

There are schools out there that are changing, but these are often independent, in the outer suburbs or higher fee paying thus unreachable for many students and families.
I enjoyed reading this article and was surprised to read that around 20% of students now do not complete Year 12. Now, finishing Year 12 isn’t the be all and end all, we hear plenty of stories of people who are successful without completing it, but why don’t they want to finish?
Is it that schools are so outdated that there are better pathways, are these students disengaged more than they have been in the past, or are teachers so overwhelmed with the curriculum that teaching in high school has become more revolved around the tests over the skill building?
We need to trust our school leaders, our school teachers and our students. With well guided teaching, our students can do so much more with their knowledge apart from tests. We need to see that projects, real world experiences and collaboration are what they world needs now in our students, and the classrooms we have are the places to support this.
Whilst this is going on, opportunities like I am offering are there to support teachers to be educated and then empowered to support the students in their classroom through tailored, meaningful and up to date curriculum.
